L.26
The Promotion of Multilateralism in the Area of Disarmament and Non-Proliferation
Australian Delegation
Australia supports effective multilateralism in the area of disarmament
and non-proliferation. Collectively, the international community
should strengthen multilateral mechanisms to meet the threat posed
by weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems, and by
conventional weapons.
Regrettably, however, we have a number of substantial difficulties
with resolution L.26, notably its failure to acknowledge the legitimate
role played by plurilateral, regional and national efforts and arrangements
to complement multilateral disarmament and non-proliferation.
Nor do we see a continuous erosion in the field of multilateral
arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation.
For these reasons we cannot support this resolution. Australia
will continue to play an active role in the international efforts
to promote disarmament and non-proliferation.
