Explanation of Vote
L. 6
Consolidation of the regime established by the Treaty for the Prohibition
of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Treaty of
Tlatelolco)
United States delegation
We will begin voting shortly on several resolutions on nuclear
weapon free zones that the Committee will consider. The United States
wishes to make clear its approach to such resolutions. The United
States recognizes the strong international support that exists for
nuclear weapon free zone treaties and protocols, and we appreciate
the value states place on them as a way of promoting nonproliferation
and regional security interests. The United State considers these
resolutions the same ay it considers the treaties themselves, that
is, on a case-by case basis. We do not expect that the U.S. vote
will change on any of the nuclear weapon free zone resolutions the
Committee will take action on during this session. At the same time,
the U.S. Government has not yet reviewed its position on protocols
the United States has already signed but has not yet ratified.
