Transcribed Statement of the Ambassador
Mr. Juan Enrique Vega of Chile, President of the CD 13-01
Distinguished delegates, as you know since I took office as President
I have been holding intensive consultations with many of the delegations
here. This is a job which I have not yet completed and which I intend
to continue next week. So far there are no results in my endeavors
to configure a program by consensus for this Conference. I also
think that I must be very candid in saying that the possibilities
of getting this consensus are very thin on the ground. However,
I am truly making an effort to carry forth the mandate I received,
which is to work on the basis of the proposal by Ambassador Amorim,
which is called the Amorim Proposal, as a basis for intensive consultations
we're holding. However, to date there's no news. I hope that next
week we'll be able or I can provide you with an exact precise report
as extensive as possible on the course of these consultations and
on their results. And at that time we'll see what the measure of
success is and if there's no success what will be our next steps.
Thus we complete our business for today. The next plenary meeting
of the Conference will be on Thursday 8 March, 2001 at 10 a.m. Thank
you very much. Meeting adjourned.
