Statement of the Ambassador of Turkey Mr. Murat Sungar to the Conference on Disarmament 22/6/01

Mr. President,
The reason that I have taken the floor today is to express on behalf of the Western Group, our gratitude for your efforts to move the Conference on Disarmament ahead. Your diligence and untiring efforts in this regard are highly appreciated sir.

Mr. President,

We believe that the Western Group on its part demonstrated a certain degree of flexibility in obtaining the results, which we hope will be beneficial for the effective functioning of the Conference. As always, flexibility in our judgment, played a key role in the achievement of this rather modest goal. Therefore, we hope that in the future, under similar circumstances all groups will be able to approach matters in a less rigid matter. Within this context I wish to underline the fact that none of the issues we deal or intend to deal with in the CD can be regarded as the permanent responsibility of any one geographical group.
