Statement by Mr Mohammed Tayhi Hosseini of the Islamic Republic of Iran
to the Conference on Disarmament 7th January 2008

Unofficial Transcript

I take the floor to react to the references made to my country in the course of  today’s meeting by the Administrator of NNSA United States of America and would like to make the following points:

As we have emphasized time and again, the Islamic Republic of Iran is a member of the NPT and all its peaceful nuclear activities are under the fullest safeguard of the IAEA.  I reiterate the fact that Iran’s nuclear program is completely in accordance with the inalienable rights of NPT member states.  All the state parties to the NPT without discrimination have an inalienable right to produce nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.  The people and government of the Islamic Republic of Iran are determined to exercise their inalienable right to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and to build on their own scientific advances in developing various peaceful aspects of this technology.  Iran does commit to its obligations under NPT and does not request anything more than exercising its inalienable right under the treaty.

Many reports issued by the IAEA in this regard have been indicative of the peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear program and the agency has repeated reaffirmed that “it has not seen indications of diversion of nuclear material to nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.”

Therefore, the reference made to this issue together with the allegation has no substance.
