Statement by Mr. Hamza Khelif of Algeria
to the Conference on Disarmament 18th March 2008

Thank you very much Mr. President.

First of all the delegation of Algeria would like to congratulate you on your accession to the Presidency of the Conference on Disarmament on this crucial phase of our work. I would like to on this occasion pay tribute to your predecessor the Ambassador of Tunisia and to Turkey for the tireless efforts they have shown in the interests of our Conference and would like to thank the Representative of Turkey for having submitted a new proposal which is based on document L1 of last year.

The new proposal CD/1840 and my delegation takes note of this proposal which we believe is a significant step forward to document L1.

Nevertheless Mr. President, and despite the improvements, to document L1 we still have some concerns, and this is why I’d like to invite you personally as well as invite the other President for 2008 to continue their consultations within the framework that you would find appropriate in order to bring positions together and overcome the stalemate that we have been witnessing here in the Conference on Disarmament.
