Dear Sir/Madam,
NGO submission to the Expert Group preparing a Study on Disarmament
and Non-Proliferation Education
The IPB does not itself run courses or educational programmes of
the type you describe. However this is a field in which we are active
in other ways. We wish to associate ourselves with the points made
by the Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy, USA in their submission
to the UN Study.
In addition, I would refer to my detailed paper (attached) delivered
to the UN Advisory Board for Disarmament Affairs on July 6, 2000.
This outlines the work of the Global Campaign for Peace Education,
initiated by the Hague Appeal for Peace (see: www.haguepeace.org),
and addresses a wide range of points, including those raised earlier
by other contributors to the Advisory Board, notably Potter, Pettigrew
and Reardon.
We recognise that in a number of key countries the climate for
public discussion of disarmament issues (notably nuclear and missile
issues) is rather unfavourable at this time. This is all the more
reason to wish you good luck in your most important endeavour. I
shall follow your work with great interest, and for this reason
I have some time ago forwarded your Information Note to our member
organizations and Global Campaign partners. I sincerely hope the
response to your request has been positive.
Yours sincerely
Colin Archer
