Links to the United Nations
Disarmament
is at the heart of the work of the United Nations. The first resolution of the
United Nations General Assembly passed in 1945 called for the "elimination
from national armaments of atomic weapons and of all other major weapons adaptable
to mass destruction." The United Nations was established to "save
succeeding generations from the scourge of war" with Article 26 of the
UN Charter stating, "In order to promote the establishment and maintenance
of international peace and security with the least diversion for armaments of
the world's human and economic resources, the Security Council shall be responsible
for formulating, with the assistance of the Military Staff Committee referred
to in Article 47, plans to be submitted to the Members of the United nations
for the establishment of a system for the regulation of armaments."
Under the
auspices of the United Nations, or through engaging its support as a secretariat,
the following disarmament processes occur: the Conference on Disarmament, the
Disarmament Commission, the General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament
and International Security, and the meetings of treaty bodies on conventional,
nuclear, chemical, biological weapons.
